About

Wullie - Toledo, Oh

Wullie is the indie rock recording duo of multi-instrumentalist David “Hap” Watz and bassist Derek Smith from Toledo, Ohio. Welding rural, folk-rock, country-and-blues aesthetics with the working-class, assembly line traditions and sensibilities of their hometown, the two create a sound that is as real and raw as it is immediately unique. No one sounds like Wullie. After years knocking around coastal cities working long hours, driving trucks, forklifts, working in the dirt —  making music at night and up early in the morning — Wullie returned to Toledo, from Seattle and Brooklyn, respectively, to live cheaply; to wrest inspiration from scenes that are true and real and that are homely, that are as truly working-class as they are; to create something faithful to who they are and that can stand distinctive and offer the indie rock world a different angle on a classic, guitar-driven sound. Wullie is as worn as a ballcap.

Recorded upstate near Woodstock, New York with Eli Crews (Tune-Yards, Nels Cline, Palm, The Fiery Furnaces) their debut EP, “Wullie One”, is streaming everywhere now.
